rip louise bourgeois
very sad to have to put up 3 rip's in as many days. louise made it 98 though - pretty good run.

flea's daughter is living in nyc and taking pix of girls with their tops off. give her 10 minutes before she's working at nylon with peaches and another 10 before they start calling her the female ryan mcginley. ugh.

so...
time magazine used to be relevant i guess...
maybe. they just did this 50 worst inventions list. kinda think they're trying to be a little agro with this list. like one part gawker, with the funny snarky shit, and one part, i don't know who, angry blogger with an attitude. lots of these aren't that bad. okay, hair in a can is bad, but really, can we get a list of the worst ever commercials? seriously, why the fuck is that sex in the city-esque taxi - "he comes when i call" - commercial still on ny1 every morning? for real?

dennis hopper
the 1st paper i ever really wanted to write in high school was an existential gem about easy rider. i don't remember what mulvey gave me on it. after a long battle with cancer, billy from easy rider, father from rumblefish, frank booth from blue velvet and flash jensen from the pick up artist - real life artist, painter, photographer, writer, director, film maker, actor - dennis hopper, has died.

as a kid born in the 70's and raised in the 80's i can remember being happy every time diff'rent strokes came on. that was of course largely due to the comic relief of gary coleman who died yesterday at 42.
life is precious. live it to the fullest while you can.

in my day, diy referred to putting out an album yourself with tapes made in your garage, or silk screening punk rock shirts in your basement. i guess me calling this diy is a sign that i'm growing up, but whatever, blame designsponge (which rocks btw). nice article. cool idea. unless you have close neighbors who fear fires.

jacob riis
jacob riis was more than just a documentarian photographer who popularized use of the flash. he was a lower east side resident who took this photo in 1888 which introduced the squalor and heinous living conditions of the downtown tenement. his book 'how the other half lives' published in 1890 has sold over 28 million copies.

kristian hammerstad
really cool stuff out of oslo from kristian hammerstad. i appreciate the pop/comic crossover as much as the next guy but there are elements of r crumb, robert williams and that whole kustom kulture thing but with a euro twist. not just lichtenstein meets warhol, but something else. it's nice, and man this guy can draw like a mutherfucker. plus you know we're suckers for skull images.

emily sutton is a illustrator out of Yorkshire who has studied at risd, york and edinburgh college, but you can't teach what she has. very cool. love these "stuffed pieces."

british artist jennifer collier creates amazing textile pieces using mostly found objects. she does shoes, watches, dresses etc all exploring the theme of the body as well as recycling. as a guy, what i liked best were these tie shadow boxes. amazing. check out her work here.

apache beat has been around for a while but like a fine wine, they keep getting better. i took this pic of illi awhile back at the bowery ballroom. they had a great night show that night and i stopped in to see them rock out for awhile. they always deliver live. so good.
